Former co-chair of the Association of Member Nominated Trustees David Weeks has died of cancer.

David WeeksWeeks, who had only stepped down from the organisation in August, was a common voice at industry events and regularly contributed to the industry’s media, having lent his insight and experience to numerous Pensions Expert articles.

He studied history at the University of Bristol and, having graduated in 1967, met his wife, Heather, soon after.

Weeks worked initially in advertising before moving into urban regeneration and consultancy, and in the early 2000s he switched to working as a supernumerary civil servant, working with a broad range of governmental departments on an array of projects.

While working at the Home Office, he was responsible for drafting materials to guide ministers on how to respond to a major incident, such as the 9/11 atrocity in New York.

On retirement, he was elected as a director of the Lovell Pension Scheme and then joined the AMNT in 2012.

Weeks was the Pensions Management Institute’s 2019 recipient of the ‘Outstanding contribution to the pensions industry’ award and was a Freeman of the City of London.

With his wife, he enjoyed an interest in the artistic and antiquarian worlds. Throughout their life together they made several tours each year to explore church architecture and local gastronomy across Europe.

Janice Turner, current co-chair of the AMNT and a long-time friend and colleague of Weeks, said: “Although I knew David was seriously ill, I am still shocked by the news. David was a good friend and colleague who cared deeply about the AMNT and fought hard to ensure that its voice was heard at the highest levels.

“He always had the interest of scheme members at heart and reminded us constantly of the importance of member-nominated trustees and the vital role they play in protecting the interests of individual scheme members.

“David stood down from his role as co-chair in August because of ill health, but remained engaged and continued to attend the committee meetings until only a couple of weeks ago,” Turner continued..

“On behalf of the membership of the AMNT, I pass my sincerest condolences to David’s wife, Heather, at this difficult time. He will be sorely missed by many.”
